B.R. firm sues over Iraq work payment

WASHINGTON -- A Baton Rouge company is suing a California contractor, contending it is owed nearly $750,000 for work building health care clinics in Iraq.

Arkel International says in the suit that it was hired by Parsons Global Services Inc., a U.S. government contractor, in 2004 after Saddam Hussein's government was toppled.

In May 2005, Arkel says, it received a complaint from Parsons that work on seven of the clinic sites was behind schedule. Arkel contends that delays on about four of the clinics were caused by circumstances outside its control, including lack of security and unanticipated additional work requirements.

Arkel says it is still owed $746,670.07 for work done on the clinics and that it is also entitled to recovery of its overhead and general administrative costs.

Concerned abut her health, she responded and a salesman showed up at her door. He spread out a test kit over her kitchen counter and drew some water from the faucet. He then dropped chemicals into tubes, which formulated a range of different colors he said meant the water was unhealthy. "He said it was very bad, polluted," she said. "He had a whole laundry list of what was wrong with it." The 74-year-old Wood suffers from high blood pressure, diabetes and cancer, and was told filtered water would help her ailments. "Their tactics were fear, mostly," she said.

CAPE MAY — With a lawsuit presenting a possible roadblock to begin reconstruction of the Washington Street Mall's infrastructure this fall, the city filed a motion Monday asking the court to dismiss a lawsuit from a group of Cape May innkeepers.

A group calling itself Concerned Taxpayers of the City of Cape May filed a complaint in Superior Court June 13 challenging the legality of a $3.5 million bond ordinance passed by city council in May.

The group wants the court to declare the bond ordinance null and void.

The complaint cites a city ordinance that specifies that the expense of maintaining curbs and sidewalks is the responsibility of adjoining property owners. It wants mall merchants to pay for new paving in front of their businesses.

At a June city council meeting, residents complained if they must pay for installation of sidewalks in front of their homes, then mall merchant should pay for repaving in front of their shops.
