Sicko’s reel change (Metro Times Detroit)

Where does entertainment end and activism begin? When asked in relation to the documentary Sicko, those two threads are so entwined the question can't be answered.

Before director Michael Moore shot a single frame of Sicko, activist groups he'd reached out to were supplying him with the stories of people who'd fallen victim to this country's health care system. The same is true of staffers for Detroit Congressman John Conyers, who has introduced a bill that seeks to create a single-payer (read government-run) universal health care system for America.

Cops: Woman used man's credit cards

EASTON | A woman who police say racked up nearly $40,000 in credit card and phone bills on accounts belonging to a man who suffers from dementia waived her preliminary hearing Tuesday.

Police say Theresa L. Wilson used at least eight credit cards, three cell-phone accounts and a car loan since January 2006 totaling $39,540. The accounts belong to John Procopio, who suffers from dementia and social isolation, police said.

Paul Aaroe, Wilson's attorney, said there is a civil lawsuit settlement in the works to resolve the money matters.

"It is agreed that there is money owed, albeit not any criminal (activity)," Aaroe told District Judge Michael Koury Jr.

Aaroe said he is working with Henry R. Newton Jr., Procopio's legal guardian, to agree upon an amount of money to be repaid.

Market trauma affects mortgages

The continuing tumult within the home loan industry sent a shock wave of fear throughout global financial markets, but it isn't just Wall Street investors who need to pay attention.

This tale has a bottom line for Albuquerque home owners and prospective home buyers.

"What's happening right now is we're having a correction," said Steve Cecco, president of the New Mexico Association of Mortgage Brokers and part-owner of AmeriStar Mortgage Group Inc. in Albuquerque. "The pendulum has swung from where it's simple to get a loan to much harder to get a loan."

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 387.18 points Thursday, its biggest one-day decline since February. It fell another 100 points early Friday, but recovered to close at just 31.14 points down after the Federal Reserve injected billions of dollars into the market.
